PROBLEM SOLVING
Everyone faces problems; big problems, small problems, work problems, personal problems,
car problems, and on and on it goes.
Some problems challenge us while others may frustrate us. Some problems are easily solved while others seem to defy solution. Some problems,
once resolved, never reoccur while others keep coming back like a bad penny.
In our haste to find a solution to a particular problem, we often have difficulty in understanding the actual
problem because we fail to adequately define and assess the problem. We often focus our
attention on the “symptoms” of the problem rather than the root of the problem.
Let’s consider the problem of a leaky roof.
We know we are having a problem with wet carpets and stained
ceilings whenever it rains. We know that if we place a bucket under the leak, the water will be
captured and our possessions will remain dry. Buckets are cheap and easy to find.
Solution:
Obtain a bucket to catch the dripping water.
We’ve treated the symptom, but have we really
solved the problem? Full buckets of water can create problems of their own and the water
continues to leak into our home which will eventually create costly structural damage. We
addressed only the symptom, not the root of the problem.
