By the time the script was finished, he [Alfred Hichcock, filmmaker] knew every detail by heart, and rarely consulted the scenario during production. He compared himself to a conductor directing an orchestra without a score. He considered the actual shooting anticlimatic. For him, the creative work was over. After observing the shooting of several scenes from a Hitchcock movie, critic Andre Bazin marveled: "I had been watching for a good hour, during which time Hichcock did not have to intervene more than twice; settled in his armchair, he gave the impression of being prodigiously bored and of musing about something completely different." When asked why he didn't simply let someone else shoot his movies, Hichcock replied: "They might screw it up."
